Multi-Axis Woodturning – What Is This?

What is itThis video is also posted to YouTube, Vimeo, and FaceBook. Why go anywhere else but here!

After turning several projects where I mimicked Max Brosi turning that I saw him demo, I decided to try a take off. This is based on his Octahedron which is named for the octagon used early in its turning. However, instead of six outlets, this one has only three.

In the end, it kind of looks like a PVC plumbing fitting. But who needs a wood plumbing fitting? I intend to make a complete set of these – just to prove that I can.

This wood is crab apple about two inches diameter, finished with walnut oil.

This is not that hard and a lot of fun.

Enjoy!

Woodturning Large Ash Bowl – What’s Not To Love

Ash BowlThis video is also posted on YouTube, Vimeo, and FaceBook. Best right here.

This block of ash was freshly cut last June when I received it in my club wood exchange. I love turning fresh wet wood – except for the part where I have to wait for it to dry.

Well, I turned it rough and thick leaving plenty of wall thickness expecting it to warp. I’ll need that thickness to turn it round again once it is dry. When I finished it, I counted it with a green wood sealer, “Wood Saver” from Craft Supplies USA.

Then it rested, and rested, and rested, in my office. Periodically, I weighed it and recorded the date and time. When it stayed near the same weight, it was ready to finish.

The bowl is 13″ diameter and 3″ high, finished with walnut oil.

Box Elder Burl Hollow Form – The Easy Way

Box Elder Burl Hollow FormThis video is also posted on YouTube, Vimeo, and FaceBook. Best right here where you are already!

This box elder burl came from my club’s wood exchange raffle. It is not a large piece but, looking at the raw wood, it has great potential. It screamed, “Hollow Me”.

I complied. Yellow alcohol die accents the burl figure. However, I sanded most of the dye off, leaving only enough to accent the figure.

The top opening is only about 1/2″. All of the hollowing was through the bottom. The vase is about 4″ diameter and 5″ tall, finished with rattle-can lacquer.

A Woodturner’s Nightmare “Woodie’s Nemesis”

Woodie's NemesisThis video is also posted on YouTube, Vimeo, and FaceBook. Best Right Here!

When on a wood acquisition journey, we cut off the end of a hollow box elder log to assess the amount of good wood. When we did, we also found old rusty nails inside the rotten hollow.

The vendor gave me the offcut. I think he just did not want to have to dispose of it.

But, at home, I thought a lot about whether I could turn the piece with the nail.

Here goes. It is about 10 inches in diameter and about 6 inches thick, finished with walnut oil. The stand is also spalted box elder.

Woodturning Bark Edge Candlestick From Crooked Branch

Crab Apple CandlestickThis video is also posted on YouTube, Vimeo, and FaceBook. Best Right Here Already!

This project is a crooked branch I cut from a crab apple tree. I’ve been watching out for such a limb following a demonstration by Paul Russell at our club meeting.

It is kind of like a multi-axis turning because the crook in the branch provides the alternate axes. It is definitely a lathe-shaker due to the off center weight distribution.

My candlestick is about 9 inches tall without the candle. The finish is walnut oil.

It is unique.

Classy, Easy, DIY Christmas Ornament Hangers

I like to make my own wire hangers for my Christmas ornaments. In my view, they are a much better alternative to screw eyelets.

Materials

  • Copper wire (silvered, copper, black, etc) 18 to 24 gauge available from craft stores and some hardware stores.
  • Drill bit or transfer punch – size to taste
  • Jacobs chuck or other way to hold bit.
  • Wire cutters
  • Pliers
  • CA glue for attaching to ornament

Wrap wire around drill bit and twist the ends together for a tight weave.

Woodturning Segmented Christmas Ornament

Christmas OrnamentThis video is also posted on YouTube, Vimeo, and FaceBook. But you’re already here!

I received some colored laminated wood from Frog Blanks to try out. This is my second attempt to use the samples both in a Christmas Ornament. After all the 2019 Christmas Ornament Challenge is open for submissions until November 30.

My key to using this wood well for a Christmas ornament is for a segmented ornament. It is critical to rotate the wood so that the plys are running vertically before cutting segments.

This ornament is about 2″ diameter and 6 inches long. I used a blue Frogwood and cherry for segments plus maple veneer, walnut, and spalted box elder. 56 total pieces of wood.

Please get your ornament ready for this year’s the Christmas Ornament Challenge. It does not have to be fancy or perfect – this bell is neither fancy or perfect. However, it is a nice addition to the Christmas Ornament Challenge.

This Christmas Ornament Is Not A Sea Urchin

Cherry OrnamentThis video is also posted on YouTube, Vimeo, and FaceBook. Best right here where you are!

After turning the “Ribbed and Holey” form recently, I received several suggestions that it could be a Christmas Ornament. And, the Christmas Ornament Challenge is open right now.

So, I thought how to scale the down to a size appropriate for a Christmas ornament. There were some challenges. But, I think it succeeded.

Remember, the Christmas Ornament Challenge. Please get your ornament ready for this year’s challenge. It does not have to be fancy or perfect – this bell is neither fancy or perfect. However, it is a nice addition to the Christmas Ornament Challenge.
