I used them to make a segmented blank for the feature ring of this ornament. The metal finial is a a kit sold at Woodcraft this year. I combined them all to make an ornament like those that we hang in our window year round. Any time we see them swaying, we know there has been a little (or big) earthquake–we have little earthquakes almost every day in Alaska.

A hollow yellow birch globe with a red veneer wave produced by cutting an arch through the blank with a band saw and filling the cut with multiple layers of red veneer. The blank is blilnd-bored with 5/8″ drill on the lathe while held in a collet chuck in the headstock, followed by a 8mm hole through the tenon. Hollowed out with a Hunter #1 C-hook taper tool. The globe is remounted between centers and the tenon removed. The finials at the top and bottom are holly. Finials held in ER20 collets for turning.

A larger ornament, based on a central hollow sugar maple body with walnut scales, 5/8″ bored through, and hollowed out held a 5/8″ pin mandrel leaving a small thin central web to maintain concentricity while hollowing on the pin mandrel from both ends. The end finials are bored through 7mm with a 5/8″ short tenon, and the fittings at both ends are anodized aluminum pressed into a long (7″) 7mm OD brass pen tube running the length of the ornament.

I created the blanks by laminating together three layers of 7/8″ maple. After the turning was completed, I used a copper metal reactive paint to give the lanterns an aged patina look.

Snowman turned from maple & painted with felt-tip marker. Ornament assembled then sprayed with three coats of clear lacquer. Cotton batten ‘snow’ added.
