2019 Christmas Ornament Challenge

2. Insideout Combined I like to combine several techniques and materials to a new project. I keep my eyes open to see and learn from every woodturning YouTube film I see. I must have seen them all. I make a special ornament for everyone of my family, and they look forward to their birthday to get one. – Hans Peters |
3. Tabletop Snowman 8 1/2″ tall, body is turned from hackberry, hat from very wormy mesquite. Decorated with scarf, feathers and coal buttons (made from small pieces of bark). – Billy Burt |

6. Light of Memories Here in Puerto Rico lights are part of our celebration. I made this for the Christmas exhibition of our chapter. This Christmas light was made with “Mamey wood” (Clusiaceae) and polyester resin and it’s 6” tall. – Jose Esteban Cruz |

8. Three Wise Men These figures were made with 7 diferent wood species (Purple heart, Caoba, Majo, Guayacan, Acacia, Tachuelo, Capa Prieto). Where I come from these kings are very enigmatic during Christmas period. – Eduardo Torres |

10. Three Wise Men Woodturned Three Wise Men. In Puerto Rico the Wise Men are a very important part of our culture. Woods used are Guayacan(lignum vitae), Majó(Taliparitielatum), Mangle plateado(conocarpus erectus), mahogany(swietenia macrophilia), embuia(ocotea porosa), caoba blanca (brosimum uleanum) – Mario Castro Torres |

12. Terebinth ornament A simple ornament made with the wood of this bush from the Mediterranean scrublands. – Mauro Migone |
13. Christmas Bell A simple bell turned from a left over lamination. – Alan Stratton |
14. Urchin Christmas Inspired by watching a Cindy Drozda video, I decided to make this sea urchin Christmas Ornament. The finials are stained maple and the body is a sea urchin shell. – George Gibson |

18. Cedar Root Ball This was turned from a cedar root. The ornament is 6 inches in diameter and a total of 14 1/2 inches tall. The ice sickle and topper are made of walnut. – Patrick Hoggard |
19. Oh Holy Cube A 2″ cube ornament made out of Bass Wood that requires precise measurements and turning so that the bottom of each of the 6 cups overlap in such a way as to create the holes. All six sides are hand painted with decorations. – Blaine Petersen |

22. Away in a Manger Ash globe, hollowed to about 1/16″ thickness, with elm finials and miniature nativity scene. Acrylic paint, poly finish. – Warnie T Lore, Jr |
23. Threaded Christmas Ornament Segmented from Holly, Maple, Red Heart and Ebony. It is threaded so that it can be used to hide a Christmas surprise on the tree. – Franklin Young |
24. With Pride This ornament’s finial and icicle are made of wenge and the body is made of Spectraply “Confetti”. The colors of the spectraply confetti almost exactly match the rainbow colors of the Pride flag and was made for our daughter and her partner. It is with “Pride“ that we will be giving them this ornament this Christmas. – Bill Sanders |
25. Seashell Ornament It is a conch shell with a 2 part mahogany finial joined together with the icicle inside the shell. I use minwax lacquer as a finish. I’ve been turning since January 2018. I’ve learned a lot from you guys on YouTube, thanks. – Desmond Jones |
26. This Christmas Ornament Is Not A Sea Urchin The body is cherry from a tree harvested a couple tears ago. They body is turned on over 7 different axes to achieve this look. The finials are mesquite. – Alan Stratton |

28. Red Cedar Tree Topper Down sizing our Christmas tree and needed a new tree topper. Made from a red cedar I cut dow last year. Had been in the yard for 30 years. – Mark Seidl |
29. Amazing Christmas Ornament This uncommon Christmas Ornament is made out of seven thin maple rings, in the center there is a small black walnut sphere, the top and bottom finials are black walnut as well. Everything is connected with a thin maple rod (also made in the lathe) and CA glue. The rings are attached in such a way that each one is rotated 15 degrees from the previous one. 31. Cage Christmas Ornament This was turned using Max Brosi’s multi axis turning method. The center is Poplar and the finals are Maple. The entire ornament weighs 0.4 oz. Approximately 2 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall. Finish is Lacquer over Shellac. – Larry Lemon |

33. The Star of Bethlehem I decided to challenge myself to try and make this segmented piece to see just how far I have came in the 1 year I have been turning wood. It is made of walnut, maple, wenge, and purpleheart. – Beau Hester |
34. Cedar Impressions I began wood turning five years ago and love it so much that the minute I finish one piece I cannot wait to begin another. My submission is a three piece hollow globe ornament made from a cedar log I found on the side of the road. Merry Christmas! – Louis Long |

39. Ballturning ruler I made a ball turning octagon helper ruler. Thought this might be useful for some of you fellow turners out there. This is my Christmas present for you! – Johan Larsby |
40. Melting I wanted to create something I had not seen and I feel this is unique. I wanted to appear as if the ornament was melting off the finial. – Rodney Jewell |

43. Batch of Birdhouses A friend gave me a random chunk of eastern red cedar from a tree he cut down. It was too small for a bowl and fairly dry so I cut it up and made these birdhouses. One blew apart when drilling the hole and was replaced with a piece off camphor. The tops are all maple except for one which is western cedar (I think). I finished these yesterday and today I started eight more. – Doug Nicholson |

46. Winged Ornament This ornament is made from a 3 inch square block of Cherry. It is started between center at opposite corners, then moved to a scroll chuck. The body of the ornament in from the one block of cherry, and the tree is made from Red Palm. – James T Carter |
47. Beaded Red Bird The beaded Red Bird was made as an experiment to see if I could recreate the methods used by the Iroquois from 1860-1920. Ornaments and pin cushions like this were sold at souvenir shops and roadside stands near prominent tourist destinations like Niagara Falls. The mistletoe branches stitched on the wings and tail was chosen not only because of the holiday but, also because the Iroquois used Mistletoe as a salve to cure headaches making it an important plant to collect in the winter. Today we know that Mistletoe is quite poisonous so we kiss under it instead. Materials: Red velvet, seed beads, and filled with Walnut shells. – Tawney Carter |
48. Organized Chaos The main body of the ornament is sapele. The inlay work is maple and rosewood. It took 60 triangles assembled into 12 pentagons to create the sphere for the ornament. The stand is made of maple and walnut. The hanger and finial for the ornament are reset oof and maple – Eli Polite |
49. Inside Out/Inside Out This is an inside out ornament within an inside out ornament. The inner ornament turns within the outer ornament. – Suzette B Edwards |
