Turning Quick and Easy Tool For Quilting Friends

This project is another quick and easy project. One that my sister who is greatly affected by the quilting virus has requested several times. If you can turn a spindle, you are good to go.
Prepare wood spindle of close grain, with a tenon to mount to a chuck. I like maple but since as a spindle, it is fairly plain, I like to add burned in grooves for accents. I like to keep the spindle finger friendly. This is not the time to show off big beads and coves.
Maple 1″ diameter by almost 7″ long finished with shellac.
The Ornament Challenge will begin accepting entries November 1st.
Enjoy.
Alan: Can you tell me what kind of wire you use to put the decorative rings on the piece? I have tried several different wires and can’t seem to get the same results that you do in this video. Thanks for your response.
Michael
Try guitar wire from a music shop. They may have a stash of wires removed from instruments for free or cheap.
I prefer non-wound wire.

Alan, great project. I designed and turned several of these a couple of years ago. My wife is active with Project Linus and the quilters made good use of them. I built a special one for my wife, of course. It’s elk antler with ebony ends all turned as one. I’ll send you a photo by email.
Elk antler could be interesting.
