Another Inexpensive Chucking Option To Supplement Jam Chucks

Pin Jaws

First, an addendum to the bouncy loops from last week. Latex tubing stretches more than I anticipated. I had to cut and re-glue to make several loops smaller. They need to be a tight fit. Check them with high speed rotation.

Meanwhile, in preparation for another project that I have not turned previously, I make pins that bolt directly to the chuck. My pins are 3/4″ diameter. The bolt that fits my VicMarc is 6 mm diameter and 50 mm (about 2 inches) long. I also made another set 30 mm long (about 1.25 inches) just in case.

I did not sand nor finish – expecting raw wood to potentially hold more securely.

There are plenty of enhancements.

I think these will come in handy for many projects that require a jam chuck. We’ll see.

Enjoy.

Great project that will come in handy on future projects.
I turned pins like these for my DIY Longworth Chuck.
I covered the wood pins with green garden hose covers and that gives a better grip.
You might try the garden hose tight covers.

Thanks for your ideas on wood turning. Since safety is very important to me, I absorb all your safety tricks.
In the countryside of South Africa, we are limited to what is in the store. No high quality glues or Latex tubes, etc. are readily available. I decided to make use of old vehicle wheel tubes cut in bands. No expensive Latex tubes or glues are needed any more and this application works as well. Fortunately all my fingers and eyes are still intact.

  3. Good idea! Thanks a lot. It is simple but can help a lot… I will surely try it. Can it replace a longworth chuck?

    • I now think that this is a mini Cole jaw option. Probably also a smaller longworth.
It is a matter of diameter and torque. I hesitate to crank hard fearing to break or bend the single bolt.

About 10 years ago, I purchase step bolts, inserted them in a Stronghold chuck, covered with small diameter air hose. I submitted the idea to AAW, but it was never published and I failed to follow up. I see that it was submitted a couple of years ago. Kudos to you for featuring the technique. I don’t think over-tightening is an issue as most work pieces would be damaged before the strength of materials is reached! Enjoy your innovation, your presentation, and your philosophy of life as indicated by the verse!

Great idea. I simply used wine corks. Drilled in the center they work quite well for my Jumbo Jaws and have no doubt will work equally well on a chuck.

Alan, GREAT IDEA! I’m lazy so I used some 1/2″ and 3/4″ oak dowels I keep on hand to make the posts. I drilled 1/4″ holes and inserted a 6mm HH cap screw I bought a box of 6m HH cap screws on Amazon. The box has 10 each of 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50mm length screws so I’m set for a while. Thanks for the idea.
