Custom Longworth Chucks For Bracelets & Bangles
This post is best viewed here on this website. However, in case of technical difficulties, it is also posted on YouTube and FaceBook.
After a great demonstration at our club meeting by Kip Christiansen, I decided to try to upgrade jigs for bracelets. Since I have some experience with Longworth chucks, I decided to make small Longworth chucks and see if they could help with bracelets.
My chucks are 3D printed with PLA. I am also investigating PLA filament strength for these chucks. My small chucks use a 1/4-20 center bolt and #8 bolts for the button bolts. I also designed a variety of button styles to accomodate different situations.
Longworth chucks can be made from Baltic birch plywood, acrylic, phenolic, etc.
Next week, I will turn a bracelet using my chuck system.
Enjoy.
Alan, this is a suggestion concerning woodturning safety. Several years ago at a club meeting an experienced turner was doing a demo when a large sliver of wood peeled off the piece he was turning and sliced into his hand. I mopped the blood off the floor and the fellow went to an emergency room.
I have always worn a thin leather glove on my left hand since I first began woodturning 20 years ago to preclude such an occurrence. Something to think about.
I have an associate who wears a glove because he turns very nasty wood.
However, I worry about that practice.
The opposing safety rule is to avoid long hair or clothing that, if caught, would pull you into the spinning lathe.
Hence, also, paper towels instead of cotton –
Pull sleeves up or wear short sleeves
Take off finger rings.
And, never touch a spinning piece (I break this rule regularly) But a machinist only breaks it once. 🙁
Gloves ?? I’d rather stitch up a cut than to lose fingers or a hand. Competing risks??
