Crooked Branch – A Wild Ride Woodturning

Apple Vase

This video is best viewed here on this page. In case of difficulty, it is also posted on YouTube and FaceBook.

In this video, I turn a project following the example of a fellow club member, Paul Russell. Paul will be presenting at the AAW symposium in Chattanoogo.

The wood is a crooked apple branch. Turning the branch is a wild ride since the wood is so off balance. Turning is slow and steady.

The finished vase?? is 16 inches tall, finished with walnut oil. It is kind of a natural edge – on seroids.

It was wild fun.

Enjoy!

    Hi Alan
Watching this video brought to mind a demonstration that I saw 50 years ago at a fair.
They were selling plates that installed between a tire rim and brake drum that dynamically balanced tires while driving. Basically a tubular ring with weights (ball bearings) suspended in oil. These days I see that some people are putting airsoft shot directly in tires with similar results.
I know you like to experiment with new techniques, so this might be something to play with. Could mount between the chuck and the spindle, and even out at least some of the imbalance.
Link to a demonstration video, steel or lead shot might be a better choice than the bearings.

    • Very interesting. It appears to have plenty of options for large wheels.
I sent a note to CentraMatic to see if they have suggestions.
