Woodturning – Simple Approach To Ornament Windows

For convenience for some, this video is also posted on YouTube and Facebook. Best Right here!
With the Christmas Ornament Challenge rapidly approaching, I am exploring different ways to peer into the center of an ornament.
Turning inside-out is one way and is the subject of other videos.
In this case, I am extending the perfect sphere process to create a globe than bore windows to look inside.

Enjoy!
Alan: I’ve made these but started with a squared rectangle (i.e., 2.5X2.5X4) and drilled the apposing holes on a drill press somewhat close to one end. Then mounted in a chuck, turned the sphere (but don’t part off as yet), drilled a small (usually 3/16) hole through the sphere for both the top and bottom finial. flattened about a 3/4 inch face on the one end to match up with the bottom finial and parted off. I usually hung a bell within.
I enjoyed the video!

Grant,
That process works depending on your drilling accuracy.
Since I know you are a great turner, how about 3 equal distant holes?
How much further could you push the process?
Alan
Don’t know about three, but I’m sure I could do TWO equal distant holes!!!!! Three would be a challenge! I saw a photo where someone had done one round hole in an elongated ornament requiring multi-axis turning… the hole was hollowed out to leave a thin shell around the hole in the tear-drop shaped ornament. That looked interesting too!
Now I sense the creative juices are flowing.
The only question is where they will flow to. 🙂
