7. Frigility #6

The ornament starts as solid cherry block. The outside was formed, sanded and then hollowed. I strive for approx. 1/16″ wall thickness. The ornament is then pierced, hand sanded and finish applied (lacquer) the hanging loop on the top is part of the ornament body. The tools I use are a 1/2″ fingernail bowl gouge which I use to shape the outside form and do at least 30% of the hollowing. The other 70% is done with a carbide swan neck tool. Oh yes, I can’t forget the calipers, measuring tools and numerous measurements, and of course, lots of patience. I use a NSK Pesto pneumatic air powered tool (300,000rpm) with a fine point dental burr (L170)to do the piecing work.

51 Billy Burt

51. Turned & Scrolled Christmas Ornament

I took a 1 7/8″ square blank of cherry and turned (or tried to) the finials.  Then I put it on the scroll saw and made the compound cuts for the inside.  This gives it the resemblance of an inside out turning, but it was a solid block of wood.  Once the turning and cutting was done, it was time for a few hours of sanding and shaping.  I finished it with gloss spar varnish.  While it looked good, it was missing something.  I decided to add a little Santa inside and it was just the right touch.  This was much more difficult than I imagined it would be, but I’m happy with the end result.  The ornament measures 2 1/4″ by 6 3/4″.

64 Billy Burt

64. Scrolled Pine Ornament

I started with a 1 1/4″ square pine spindle blank. I scrolled two sides of the blank making this a compound cut. I like the compound cutting well enough, but it left the ornament looking a little bland after sanding and finishing. So I painted a tiny pine cone that looked like a flower red with a yellow center and glued it into the inside of the Pine ornament. Much better!

282. Kimi – Kokeshi Ornament Box

I know that it is a little disconcerting to have a decapitated doll in pictures but I promise, there is a reason! I have been fascinated with Japanese kokeshi dolls since I was a little girl. I got a lathe for Christmas last year because I told my husband I wanted to learn how to turn one. I made a few and then was lucky enough to discover we had a local guild. They taught me how to make vessels and I was hooked! Kokeshis weren’t challenging enough anymore. But, after a few bowls, I had this idea to turn my kokeshi into pin cushions and boxes and now ornaments. Each one has a personality of her own and I get to paint the kimonos any way that I want. These are made with box elder and decorated with color pencil and posca markers. Every year for the last 33 years I have made an ornament of something symbolizing my new craft or where I was living at the time. I have made shell, glass, acrylic and fabric ornaments. Next year, family and friends are definitely getting another turned ornament.

Call me old school, but I believe the ornament contest has lost its way. I’ve been watching for years, and while the contest initially was all about making a ornament on a lathe, that’s no longer the case.

I dropped out of the AAW for the same reason. Not much in their mafpgazine that is actually lathe work.

It’s all great work, just not work sone on a lathe.
