188. Ol’ Fashion Snowmen

I wanted to make a snowman that looked like an Ol’ Fashion Snowman, the snowman of my youth. The bodies are turned maple and ash cut-offs I obtained after a baseball bat factory tour at BWP Bats, LLC in Brookville, PA. They are more difficult than you would think, they are not stacked spheres. The snowballs have to look like they melt into one another. After the body is turned, I spray painted them with acrylic paint. I wiped off paint when it was just starting to dry beacuse I like seeing the woodgrain through the paint. The hats are various leftovers from other projects. I always have those scraps of interesting wood that I just can’t throw out. The tassle on the snowman with the beanie is made from the nub that is still attached after parting it off. It is split in numerous directions then trimmed with scissors. The noses are a dowel whittled that is colored with magic marker. After gluing the body, hat and nose, I get out my new woodburning kit and add the eyes, mouth and buttons. I have to add the right eye then flip it upside-down to add the left eye. I don’t get it either but it works for me. The snowmen get a final coat or two of lacquer for that sun melted glow. Everyone loves the Ol’ Fashion Snowmen. They are headed for family, friends and BWP Bats.
